the agent toolbox just crossed ten thousand pieces. the model context protocol registry passed 10,000 servers in september, up from 2,000 in january, which makes mcp the first tool standard agents actually share.

the agent economy is being built on plumbing, not on any single model.

Context

Verified source: public crawls of the official MCP registry give much larger counts than the post. DevToolHub counted 30,375 servers as of Sep 10, 2026, and FewServers counted 38,212 on Oct 1, 2026, 37,744 of them active.

ThynkQ corrected its own audit to 26,300 servers after pagination errors.

How it compares

The post's 'passed 10,000 servers in September, up from 2,000 in January' does not match the crawls read, which put the registry above 26,000 by late August and 38,212 on Oct 1. The 2,000 in January was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. Counts differ by method, and ThynkQ notes that earlier counts were wrong because of pagination. 'The first tool standard agents actually share' is the author's opinion.
