spacex is flying a google tpu prototype into orbit on transporter-18, the first in-space test of alphabet’s solar-powered ai data center plan, and china’s chaozhisuan-1 already processes earth-observation data on orbit and serves other satellites over laser links. nasa and loft orbital put a gemma 3 vision-language model on a satellite that identifies features of interest without sending raw data home.
the next data center frontier is a vacuum with solar panels.
Context
Google's blog dated Oct 1, 2026 says its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite is in orbit. Venture Atlas reports a Falcon 9 lifted Transporter-18 from Vandenberg at 2:32 p.m. EDT on Oct 1, 2026 carrying it.
China's Chaozhisuan-1, also called Supercomputing-1 (S-AIDC-1), launched on Sep 20, 2026 on a Kinetica-1 rocket, per China in Space, DCD and SatNet. SatNet says it analyzes captured images on orbit, picks data worth downlinking and carries laser inter-satellite links. IEEE Spectrum (Jul 23, 2026) reports NASA put Google's Gemma 3 on a satellite.
The Transporter-18 launch is Oct 1, 2026, and the Google blog says the prototype is already in orbit, so 'is flying' is now past tense. Chaozhisuan-1 and the NASA and Loft Gemma test match the sources. That it serves other satellites over laser links was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. The sources say it carries laser links. 'The next data center frontier is a vacuum with solar panels' is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.
