soundhound’s voice ai went from about 9,000 restaurants in 2024 to more than 16,000 today, and chipotle credits ai menu engineering with a 15% jump in average check on some promotions, while qsr operators report 15-50% labor cuts from automation. kfc and luckin now run ai ordering agents, and one chinese chain put cooking robots in 660+ stores.
the question for restaurants stopped being whether to adopt ai, it is which part of the kitchen gets replaced first.
Context
SoundHound's restaurant page describes OASYS as a voice-native agentic platform for restaurants, and its Feb 25, 2025 release announced a next-generation platform for drive-thru and omnichannel ordering. TechNode (Jun 4, 2026) says KFC, Luckin Coffee and Mixue joined Alibaba's Qwen App as branded third-party agents.
36Kr (Aug 4, 2026) says KFC launched the AI ordering agent Xiao K in February, built on Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen model, where users order and pay by voice.
The SoundHound platform, KFC's and Luckin's AI ordering agents match the sources. The restaurant counts of about 9,000 in 2024 and 16,000 now, Chipotle's 15 percent average check increase, the 15 to 50 percent labor cuts and the 660-plus store cooking robots were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. One 2026 analysis reports a verified average check lift of 3 to 6 percent in chains with clean data, against pitched 15 to 20 percent. 'Which part of the kitchen gets replaced first' is the author's.
