elevenlabs just spent $300m buying back employee stock at a $22b valuation, double its february price, to keep its voice engineers from leaving. when the retention tool is liquidity, the talent war stopped being about salary.
employee ownership just became the most expensive perk in ai.
Context
Verified date: ElevenLabs announced on Sep 30, 2026 that it closed a $300 million employee tender offer valuing it at $22 billion, double its Series D valuation in February. TechCrunch puts the February valuation at $11 billion on a $500 million raise. Wellington and T. Rowe Price led the tender, and The Next Web reports Goldman Sachs, GIC and EQT also bought in.
The Next Web adds that the chief executive wants the company ready for a listing within two and a half years.
The $300m, $22b and the doubling from February match ElevenLabs' own post and TechCrunch. The post says the company 'bought back' stock; the sources say investors bought shares from employees in a tender, so ElevenLabs was not the buyer in the reporting read. That the aim was to keep voice engineers from leaving was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. 'Employee ownership is the most expensive perk in AI' is the author's opinion.
