databases just became the first fully agent-built software category. neon telemetry inside databricks’ 2026 report shows 80% of databases are now created by ai agents, up from 0.1% two years ago, with 97% of test environments agent-built.
the agent artifact of choice is the database, not the pull request.
Context
Verified source: Databricks' 2026 State of AI Agents report, covered on its blog on Jan 27, 2026, says AI agents create 80% of databases and 97% of database testing and dev environments, using Neon telemetry. Neon was acquired by Databricks, announced May 14, 2025.
The 2025 acquisition release already said over 80 percent of databases provisioned on Neon were created by AI agents.
The 80% and 97% match Databricks, but the report is from Jan 2026, not recent, and the 80% figure was already cited in May 2025. The 0.1% two years ago was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. The numbers describe databases on Neon, a serverless Postgres service, not databases in general, and Databricks sells the Lakebase product it argues for. 'The first fully agent-built software category' is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
