Chip design is being designed by agents now

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

chip design is being designed by agents now: synopsys’ autonomous verification agent claims up to 50x faster time-to-validated rtl with 20% more coverage, and cadence’s chipstack creates and verifies designs from high-level specs, with nvidia and qualcomm reporting 10x verification efficiency. nvidia’s chipnemo llm alone recovers 5-10% of engineering hours, worth hundreds of millions a year.

the foundry gets the silicon, the agents get the spec.

Context

Synopsys' Autonomous Verification Closure Agent page claims 50x faster RTL validation and 20 percent higher coverage. Synopsys announced its AgentEngineer portfolio and Autopilot Platform on Sep 28, 2026.

Cadence introduced the ChipStack AI Super Agent for design and verification on Feb 10, 2026.

How it compares

The 50x and 20 percent figures match Synopsys' own page, so they are a vendor claim. ChipStack matches Cadence's release for creating and verifying designs. The NVIDIA and Qualcomm 10x verification efficiency and ChipNeMo's 5 to 10 percent of engineering hours worth hundreds of millions were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. NVIDIA's ChipNeMo paper (Oct 2023) is about domain-adapted LLMs for chip design tasks.
