Ai music hit its legal reckoning
ai music hit its legal reckoning: round hill is suing suno and anthropic for up to $1 billion, umg and sony added 60,000 recordings to their boston case against suno, and a munich court ruled that recognisable outputs prove training data was reproduced. suno says v6 trained on licensed music only, which is exactly what the labels dispute.
the output is fine, the training is the crime.
Context
Reuters (Aug 17, 2026) reports Round Hill Music sued Anthropic and Suno in California federal court, and Music Business Worldwide (Aug 18) says it is seeking up to $1 billion from each and is not looking to settle. UMG and Sony added a claim to their Suno case accusing it of circumventing YouTube protections (Music Business Worldwide, Aug 27).
Suno introduced its v6 models on Sep 9, 2026, developed with partners including Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe (Suno, Engadget, Music Business Worldwide).
The Round Hill suits against Suno and Anthropic for up to $1 billion match Reuters and Music Business Worldwide. The 60,000 added recordings and the Munich court ruling that recognisable outputs prove reproduced training data were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. Suno's v6 was built with label partners, which is narrower than 'trained on licensed music only'; the sources read do not say whether the labels dispute that.
