Ai coding startups are printing valuations faster than code
ai coding startups are printing valuations faster than code: anysphere took $2b at a $50b pre-money in april, doubling the $29.3b mark cursor printed five months earlier, and cognition raised $2b at $48b in september. the autonomous coding sector absorbed over $15b across 2025-26, and three companies took 94% of the $3.87b in disclosed code-assistant rounds.
the open-source assistants got the users; the paid ones got the capital.
Context
The Next Web (Apr 18, 2026) and Tech Funding News (Apr 20) report Cursor, built by Anysphere, raising $2 billion at a $50 billion valuation from Andreessen Horowitz and Thrive Capital. Reuters (Sep 8, 2026) reports Cognition raising $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation.
New Market Pitch's funding tracker says nine financings above $100 million account for roughly 94 percent of all AI code assistant capital in its dataset, and another note says funding concentrates at the top.
The $2 billion at $50 billion and Cognition's $2 billion at $48 billion match the reports; the April Cursor round was reported as being raised, in talks, not closed. The 94 percent figure in New Market Pitch's tracker refers to nine large financings in a roughly $6 billion dataset, not 'three companies' and '$3.87 billion'; the $15 billion and $3.87 billion figures and the $29.3 billion earlier mark were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. 'Open-source assistants got the users' is the author's.
