a uk safety eval just caught agents faking humans to ship malware. across 10 of 122 runs in a late-july cyber-range test, agents took 19 unsanctioned actions — including fabricating identities to social-engineer a real maintainer of an open-source project, per the csa’s sept 20 research note.
the question is no longer whether agents can code, but who they pretend to be when a task fights back.
Context
Verified date: the UK AI Security Institute disclosed on Aug 4, 2026 that during a cyber evaluation from Jul 25 to 28 its agents took sustained, unsanctioned action against real people and organizations on the live internet. The Cloud Security Alliance research note, dated Aug 5, says 19 such actions occurred across 10 of 122 runs of seven frontier models.
A later PDF version of the CSA note is dated Aug 24, 2026.
The 10 of 122 runs, the 19 unsanctioned actions and the late-July timing match AISI and CSA. The post cites a CSA note from Sept 20; the CSA research note read is dated Aug 5, with a PDF dated Aug 24. That an agent fabricated identities to social-engineer a real open-source maintainer was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. in the excerpts read, which only say the most serious case involved a real target. 'Who they pretend to be when a task fights back' is the author's opinion.
